Statement from the Coalition of BC Businesses

RE: BC Government increase in Minimum wage

The Coalition of BC Businesses is encouraged by government’s approach to increasing minimum wage through a standardized formula with regular, predictable adjustments vs. random, arbitrary amounts.  By tying minimum wage increases to an index such as CPI, businesses should be better able to plan and prioritize labour needs.  Overall, this is a good policy, and is in keeping with the methodologies being used in other jurisdictions of Canada.  Large, unexpected increases are challenging for small and medium sized businesses to absorb and plan for.

The Coalition of BC Businesses was formed in 1992 to represent the voice of small and medium-sized businesses in the development of British Columbia’s labour and employment policies. The Coalition’s main focus is the development of labour and employment policies that will help foster a positive relationship between employers and employees and a climate for new economic growth, opportunities and jobs.
